LinkedIn Connection Note vs No Note: Acceptance Barely Moves, Replies Do (2026)

Close-up of a fountain pen nib writing cursive handwriting on lined paper, with the pen's shadow falling across the page.

Quick answer: On a LinkedIn connection note vs no note, acceptance barely changes. Expandi and La Growth Machine show gaps of 0 to 3 points. Waalaxy shows notes losing by about 12 points, tied to long notes and links. The payoff shows up in replies. Add a short note when the person knows you. Skip it on cold lists.

I send connection requests for my own coaching pipeline, so I’ve argued with myself about this one for years. The data is thinner than the blog posts make it sound. Here’s what the vendors measured, where they disagree, and the rule I use.

Does a LinkedIn connection note vs no note change acceptance?

Barely, and the direction depends on who ran the test. Every figure below comes from a software vendor, not an independent study, and none of them publish full methodology.

Source No note With note
Expandi, citing a Belkins study of 20M+ attempts 26.37% 26.42%
La Growth Machine, 9,000 leads, A/B test 31% 29% (sales note), 32% (vague note)
Waalaxy, 10,000+ invitations about 38% about 26% for long notes or notes with a link

Expandi calls its two numbers “close enough to call identical.” La Growth Machine ran an A/B test where the vague note beat the honest sales note by three points. Waalaxy’s gap is the biggest, and it comes from long notes and links, not from notes in general.

Do notes help reply rates and booked calls?

Yes, that’s where the data points. Expandi reports a 9.36% reply rate with a personalized opening note against 5.44% without, a 72% lift among people who accepted. It cites Belkins for the study. I haven’t read the Belkins report myself, so treat that as the vendor’s claim.

La Growth Machine tracked calls too. Its no-note audience booked 3.77% qualified calls, the sales-note audience 6.62% and the vague-note audience 5.1%. Acceptance looked flat. Booked calls didn’t.

That fits the logic. A note can’t make a stranger want to connect. It can make the next message feel less cold, because they already saw a reason to hear from you.

Should I send a note with every request?

No. Use this rule:

  1. Send a note when the person has a reason to know you: they commented on your post, you share a group, or you met at an event.
  2. Skip the note on cold lists, where a generic line adds nothing and a link can cost you acceptance.
  3. Keep it short at one or two sentences. Free accounts cap notes at 200 characters, and Premium allows 300, according to a Salesforge help page.
  4. Never put a link in it. Waalaxy’s worst numbers came from long notes and links.

What happens when a free account runs out of notes?

LinkedIn limits free accounts to a small number of personalized invites per month. I couldn’t find a LinkedIn help page that states the number, and third-party sources disagree. Reports range from 3 to 10 a month. Past the cap, the request still goes out, just without a note.

That limit is one more reason to spend notes where they matter. Save them for people with a real reason to know you.

Where does engagement beat the note?

Engagement before the request does what a note tries to do. If someone liked or commented on your post, they already know your name when the invite lands, and the note can say so in one line. I built LeadBase around that idea because I was doing it by hand: finding people who reacted to my content, then messaging them. I haven’t run a clean test of note vs no note across LeadBase campaigns, so I won’t quote you a number.
